I can kill all of them if I want. Therefore, I can save all of them if I want.

Yoo Sangah is one of Kim Dokja's colleagues and current party members.

After her death, she is reincarnated as 'Successor of Sakyamuni'.

Appearance[]

Yoo Sangah (Webtoon Chapter 1)

Yoo Sangah is described as being Mino Soft's beauty, with a gentle and lively look about her. While her expression is normally warm, it becomes somewhat cold when she is thinking. Her smiles are often described as refreshing. She has brown hair just past her shoulders, which she generally wears in a low ponytail; her bangs cover her eyebrows.[citation needed] During the scenarios she does not seem to wear make up.

During the subway and the first scenarios, she wore a white blouse and stockings. After the destruction of the Absolute Throne, she wore the S-grade speed-boosting [Rich Cat's Leather Suit], a tight black battle suit, which she found inside of the green meteorite.[2][3] After the 73rd Demon King scenario, she began to wear a wide coat on top of her battle suit.[4] She also gained a bracelet after the Demon King Selection, possibly given to her by Kim Dokja.[5]

When she is reincarnated into the body of Tang Sanzang as Sakyamuni's successor, she wears a fine, elegant Buddhist robe and a slender crown.[6]

Personality[]

At first glance, Yoo Sangah seems like an ideal protagonist who is almost "too good to be true". Though her most outstanding qualities are her "hard work, sincerity, and patience",[7]she is also known to be affable and kind-hearted. Her general competence and conscientiousness led her to be called a model employee at Mino Soft. In all aspects of life, Yoo Sangah always tries to do the best she can, as she has a vested interest in self-improvement, taking initiative to learn new skills on her own. She is a lover of literary fiction (e.g. Haruki Murakami, Raymond Carver, Han Kang),[8]health-conscious and places value on her appearance. Though initially presented as a neat and well-adjusted woman who managed to fit perfectly into society, it quickly becomes clear that this is not quite the case.

One of Yoo Sangah's biggest strengths is her remarkable adaptability and how quickly she finds her footing in new situations. Though frequently underestimated at first, she is shown to be a quick learner, eager to prove herself and ambitious. Her overall success, both pre-scenarios as well as during the scenarios, can probably be attributed to this quality as well as her general work ethic.

Furthermore, Yoo Sangah is highly intelligent and a strategic thinker. Despite her warm demeanor, she does not trust others blindly and will be secretive when necessary, which raised suspicion among characters such as Yoo Joonghyuk or Han Sooyoung who quickly identified her as a threat.[3] She excels at reading other people quickly and seeing through their facades. In conversation, Yoo Sangah will sometimes employ methods that are similar to Socratic questioning, i.e. ask pointed questions while feigning ignorance to lead the other person to a certain conclusion or insight. Because of this, she is occasionally described as strangely "sharp" and somewhat unsettling.[9] Yoo Sangah is a naturally empathetic person who shows great curiosity in others. Sometimes this leads her to unintentionally overstep personal boundaries (e.g. ask about Kim Dokja's past or read the records of his life in The Library without his explicit permission). However, generally speaking, she is very tactful and diplomatic. Out of consideration to other people's feelings, she usually chooses to make her point in less direct ways, though with the same surgical precision as characters like Han Sooyoung. Due to her interpersonal skills, she is mostly well-liked and a capable leader. Yoo Sangah also has the tendency to enjoy doing strange things, such as putting an ice cube in Han Sooyoung's mouth.[10]She often playfully teases the people she is close to and has a good sense of humor with a seeming penchant for pranks.

Fundamentally, Yoo Sangah is a deeply kind person who has a strong sense of responsibility. It is not an act to conceal her true nature but an intrinsic part of her personality, no matter the external circumstances. She always tries to be a pillar of strength for others, often to the point of self sacrifice. Similar to Kim Dokja, she will sometimes lie about the true extent of her problems, so as to avoid burdening her companions. It is implied that even pre-scenarios she had the tendency to "hide herself for others".[11] Her sponsorship with <Olympus> nearly proved lethal because she overused their stigmas in her efforts to protect the party. On her deathbed, she was still reluctant to show weakness to anyone, instead using her last moments to reassure the party members.[12] This behavior likely stems from a desire to be useful, and perhaps low self esteem. Yoo Sangah is aware of her own short-comings and does not believe herself to be as good of a person as others might think. In certain moments, especially at the beginning of ORV, her humility even turns into feelings of inferiority. She feels guilty for being incapable of saving more people, and laments how ruthless she had to become during the scenarios.[13][14] Like most incarnations, it is implied that she struggles with survivor's guilt and thus feels obligated to do her best and help where she can. However, unlike Jung Heewon, her sense of morality isn't black and white.

Despite being outwardly serene and positive, Yoo Sangah often suppresses feelings of bitterness and resentment. She tends to be very self controlled, but isn't scared of open displays of emotions, such as crying in front of others. When seriously angered, Yoo Sangah gets cold and curt. She will not shy away from threatening others, though these situations rarely occur. In most cases of mild annoyance, she resorts to passive aggressiveness and snippy comments. Yoo Sangah also appears to have a good memory, as she is capable of remembering small details[15] and holding grudges.[3] However, she is capable of forgiveness too, as seen by her friendship with Han Sooyoung.

Occasionally, Yoo Sangah acts in unexpected, almost shocking ways: such as ignoring her family's expectations to join a game company, pouring pepper into coffee, and suggesting that Kim Dokja's company should regress again after the 1865th round.[16]These actions, though seemingly impulsive, appear to be somewhat pre-meditated or the consequence of an ongoing internal struggle. They also prove that Yoo Sangah is not quite the goody two-shoes she appears to be. Though generally agreeable and rarely in direct opposition to governing systems, she is neither a stickler for rules nor a pushover. Yoo Sangah is stubborn, holds herself to high standards and has the necessary backbone to forge her own path, no matter what her surroundings expect of her. She never sacrifices her personal integrity, even when this attitude puts her in great danger.

Throughout ORV, Yoo Sangah gains self-confidence and learns to embrace a certain amount of selfishness that allows her to pursue her own dreams and live an authentic "Sangah life".

History[]

Yoo Sangah came from a well-off family. Her mother was from a wealthy family, and her father worked as a judge, while her two elder brothers were doctors. They wanted Yoo Sangah to marry rich, but she wished to be independent instead and broke free from their expectations by applying for a job at Mino Soft, a game company.[17] There, she took the interview alongside Kim Dokja, and they passed with the highest score. Yoo Sangah was placed in the HR department as a contractor. She had a first-class degree in Korean history.[18]

During her employment at Mino Soft, Yoo Sangah was a constant target of sexual harassment due to being a woman in a mostly-male workplace. There were rumors that she had male co-workers driving her home every day.[8] The reason she was on the subway when the scenarios began was because Han Myungoh had stolen her bicycle to try to force her to let him give her a ride in his car.[19] Having to endure this harassment on a regular basis at Mino Soft resulted in a notable incident when Yoo Sangah snapped and poured pepper in the breakroom coffee grounds. Kim Dokja was also present in the breakroom at this time, and his silent support of her rebellious actions and his choice not to report her to management caused her to take an interest in him.

Soon before the start of the scenarios, a well-executed deal with a foreign buyer led to her promotion to a full time employee.

Synopsis[]

At the beginning of the story, Sangah was introduced as Kim Dokja's more successful coworker and a "perfect heroine". However, when the scenarios began, her way of life was violently upended and she needed to rely on Kim Dokja's knowledge and leadership to survive. She struggled greatly when the scenarios began because her previously acquired skills proved to be useless in this new world. Her guilt over being unable to meaningfully contribute to Dokja's party exacerbated her pre-existing inferiority complex,[15] upon which she vowed to become stronger. Yoo Sangah successfully grew into a capable and beloved leader when managing Chungmuro station during Main Scenario 4. Her interpersonal skills as well as her knowledge of history repeatedly proved to be key to victory.

After being separated from Kim Dokja and forced to fend for herself, Yoo Sangah's power level rose sharply. Her sponsor, the entire <Olympus> Nebula acting through Ariadne, allowed her to improve her combat skills rapidly. She received access to a large number of stigmata and turned into a lethal fighter by using them simultaneously on the battlefield, allowing her to be as brutal as she could be kind. Despite the cruelty of the scenarios, Yoo Sangah tried to uphold ethics and minimize harm.[20] During this time period she grew close enough to Kim Dokja for other party members to question their relationship status. However, unbeknownst to Yoo Sangah, the Nebula was using her as a puppet to spy on Kim Dokja.[21]She ended up stealing information about a prophecy from them that foretold the death of incarnation Kim Dokja, though it came at a great personal cost.[22]

After the events in Dark Castle, Yoo Sangah and Han Sooyoung reluctantly cooperated to lead Kim Dokja's Company through the scenarios and contact government officials. She and several other companions joined Kim Dokja's team fairly late into the Demon King Selection, but majorly contributed to their final victory. When Kim Dokja suspected that an Outer God would appear soon in the aftermath of their battle against Surya, he entrusted Yoo Sangah with his plans and relied on her to lead Kim Dokja's Company together with Han Sooyoung during his absence.

In the following three years, Yoo Sangah and Han Sooyoung began living together in the industrial complex with Lee Sookyung. Despite their past, Sangah had gotten closer with Sooyung and has since move past her grudge against her.Among regular incarnations, the "Moonlight Empress" was highly regarded. However, due to overusing the Hermes Stigma predictive ability in Kim Dokja's absence to help clear the scenarios, Yoo Sangah drastically shortened her lifespan and nearly died. She was saved at the last moment by Kim Dokja, who fed her soul to the Fourth Wall,[17] upon which she became one of the Librarians. This role let her "read" Kim Dokja's entire past history, giving her unique insight into his personality and motivations, as well as influence the scenarios by controlling the "revelations" received by the dokkaebis.[23] Due to her time in the Fourth Wall, she became one of the party members who understood Kim Dokja the best, and used this knowledge to try and dissuade him from sacrificing himself.[24]

After her time in the Fourth Wall, Yoo Sangah was reincarnated as Tang Sanzang and took on a supporting role in all battles as she had lost all of her Stigmas and abilities from Olympos. She instead has abilities that can manipulate the flow of time. She was particularly important during the Remake of the Journey to the West, when the Nebula pleaded Yoo Sangah to use the Constrictive Headband on the Ancient Liberator (the 5 Sun Wukongs including Dokja), but instead removed it.[25]

During the epilogue, Yoo Sangah knew for a long time that the Kim Dokja who left the subway was an avatar, but chose to respect his decision.[26] However, she decided to group regress to the 1865th turn with the rest of Kim Dokja's Company.[27] After the 1865th turn ended in failure, Yoo Sangah started working for the government and went to pick up Han Sooyoung so they could go to the Kim Dokja's Company meetup together.[28] When Han Sooyoung revealed that she had been working on writing Omniscient Reader's Viewpoint, Yoo Sangah offered her own stories to her.[7]

  • Arachne's Web/Ariadne's Web (Stigma): Presumably granted by Ariadne, this stigma allows the user to freely create and manipulate fine threads. The name has been translated as both Arachne's and Ariadne's Web on different occasions (Arachne is the mortal woman who was turned into a spider by Athena for her hubris).
  • Hermes Walking Method (Stigma): Granted by Hermes, this is a movement-enhancing stigma that allows the user to move freely through air and on land, as if they had wings on their feet.
  • Theseus' Resolution (Stigma): Granted by Theseus, this is a stigma that draws out all the power of the user for a short period, making them immensely strong but leaving them drained afterwards.[29]
