Shin Yoosung is one of Kim Dokja's and Yoo Joonghyuk's party members, and Kim Dokja's sponsored Incarnation. She is a character from the original Ways of Survival, and the child whose 41st round adult self appeared in Main Scenario 5 as the Disaster of Floods.

Appearance[]

Shin Yoosung is originally slightly taller than Lee Gilyoung. She has short brown hair without bangs and red eyes. She is described as having a cute countenance and full cheeks, with a slightly Western look to her face.[2][3]

Personality[]

Shin Yoosung is comparatively polite and usually acts fairly mature. However, she can be childish, stubborn, and easily angered at times, particularly when around Lee Gilyoung. She is also somewhat competitive. She is caring and loyal to a fault. She is obedient and extremely determined, seeing herself as the responsible one among herself, Lee Gilyoung, and Lee Jihye.

Shin Yoosung has a calculative and cunning nature, which allowed her to survive the early scenarios alone. This has caused her to act against her sense of justice for the sake of survival. Due to this, she is prone to bouts of self-doubt or self-hatred, becoming serious or gloomy.

History[]

Prior to the scenarios, Shin Yoosung lived with her parents and pet dog. During Main Scenario 1, she killed her dog to survive. At some point, possibly in the first scenario itself, her parents died. In the next few scenarios, Shin Yoosung survived on her own through various means. She stole a coat from an old man who fell to an attack, killed a woman who used to look after her in order to protect her green zone, and gave over a person being hunted by someone in exchange for food.[4] Her location during these first four scenarios is unknown, though she eventually ended up with a group of wanderers living close to the south of Han River, near Yeongsan-gu, where she was found by Kim Dokja.[5]

Synopsis[]

Main Scenario 5[]

Shin Yoosung's first appearance is when she approaches Kim Dokja to thank his group for providing food to some people in Main Scenario 5. Dokja asks her about her parents to which she replies that they're gone. She returns at night to give them a blanket as she was worried if they were cold. She is stopped from leaving by Han Sooyoung who notices that she is the Disaster of Floods. She accuses Dokja to be a hypocrite when he did make a move and decides to kill Shin Yoosung herself. That plan is quickly discarded after Dokja and Yoo Sangah say they don't want to kill her.

Shin Yoosung overhears Kim Dokja telling Yoo Sangah about her being the fifth Disaster and asks Kim Dokja if she is a bad person in the future. She also says she's always been a bad girl because of her methods of survival. Kim Dokja decides to sponsor her Growth Package I, Growth Package 2 and a New Scenario Commemorative Package and asks her if she would sign a Sponsor Contract and become his incarnation and she agrees, becoming his incarnation.

Kim Dokja then stages a crisis, deliberately letting himself get injured in the Han River, to stimulate Shin Yoosung's awakening. She successfully evolves and receives the attribute Beast Lord.

After crossing the river, they meet up with Han Donghoon and Lee Gilyoung. Lee Gilyoung and Shin Yoosung bicker about who's more important to Dokja and who knows more about Dokja.

Main Scenario 8[]

When opening her lootbox, she received an Ancient Beast's fruit - an SSS-grade item.

Personal Attributes[]

  • Beast Tamer (Rare): Possibly acquired through Shin Yoosung taming her pet dog. Raises affinity with beasts and boosts the user's authority over them.[4]

  • Beast King's Sensitivity: Linked to the Beast Lord attribute. A coat or cloak of white fur grows over the user, blocking all attacks and making the user invincible.[6]
  • Agile Feet: Presumably a speed- or agility-enhancing skill.[4]
  • Hybridization[4]

Trivia[]

  • Taking the year that ORV started (2018) to be the same calendar year in-text at the start of the novel, and assuming that all ages are given according to the Korean system, Shin Yoosung was born in the year 2008.
  • At karaoke she enjoys playing the tambourine while listening to the songs Lee Jihye sings. She sometimes duets with Lee Jihye or sings the theme songs of cartoons she liked when she was younger.[9]
  • If Shin Yoosung attended high school in a world where the apocalypse never happened, she would make friends who would often ask her for a lot of advice due to her calm and gentle personality. She would initiate conversations with students who are left out and would be in charge of managing the school’s rabbit farm.[9]
  • She dislikes kimchi unless it has been watered down and beans.[10]
