Reinheit von Djerba was one of the 10 Evils in Ways of Survival and master of Paradise in the Dark Castle.

Appearance[]

“A man with a beautiful appearance stood there, as if he had been carved into a sculpture.”[1]

Reinheit is so beautiful it takes people's breath away and impossible to describe or compare. Kim Dokja calls it a "demonic beauty".

In the Webtoon Reinheit appears as a man with long blond hair, golden eyes, pointed ears, and a pair of yellow horns that form the appearance of a broken halo. He wears white and gold robes.

Reinheit acts like a perfect saint, providing kindness and safety to incarnations. However, he is shown to also be cruel and ruthless, willing to feed innocent people to the Perpetual Motion Tree to keep Paradise alive. He seems to have started with genuine good intentions and on his deathbed pleads that he only wanted to help people, but over 800 years, he became willing to do evil to support his own Paradise.

History[]

800 years ago, Reinheit participated in the scenarios. The Dark Castle was his 34th scenario and all the incarnations around him killed each other. 700 years ago, he found the scenario after Main Scenario 9, but couldn't complete it and hid in Paradise which was formed through making a deal with the dokkaebis.

In the original Ways of Survival he is one of the 10 Evils and is killed by Yoo Joonghyuk in most regressions.

Trivia[]

  • Reinheit's title "von Djerba", meaning 'from Djerba' is likely a reference to Djerba the land of the lotus eaters in Homer's Odysssy. Paradise seems to be inspired by the lotus eaters, as the island has a giants lotus tree that provides lotus flowers that act as drugs that trap the victims in a peaceful sleepiness and make them not want to leave.[3]
  • The name Reinheit is a German word meaning purity, fitting for his character's persona of innocence and title as the "Purest Evil". [4]
  • In Chapter 160, Reinheit's house is referred to as 언덕 위 하얀집, meaning "white house on the hill" which was also a term used to refer to mental hospitals in Korea, a subtle hint at the true nature of Paradise.[5]
  • The Hangul spelling of Reinheit's name translates to Rainhait which the feminine form of the German word. The English translation translated it as the masculine form Reinheit. The Hangul also spells Jerba which is another spelling of Djerba.
