Raphael, also known by the constellation modifier Guardians of Youth and Travel, is a high ranking archangel of the <Eden> nebula.

Appearance[]

Raphael is an archangel who appears as a boy in his early teens with curly hair[1] and sleepy, half-lidded eyes.[2][3]

He is often seen sitting on a floating cloud.[1][2][4][5]

Personality[]

Although Raphael seems at first to be a lazy person with an easygoing demeanor, his actions belie an inner bitterness. Raphael is irritated by simple things like speaking to answer a colleague's question,[1] and he casually criticizes Uriel for being fond of humans in front of Kim Dokja.[2] He often makes fun of people, such as when he teases Kim Dokja for looking sleepy, then lies to him about the sheep in Eden to amuse himself;[2] Asmodeus remarks that Raphael's propensity to quip is still the same after Raphael tells him to stop being snarky or get his piehole stuffed again.[4]

This tendency to mock others could be taken as evidence for a mischievous side, but in combination with his rebuke of Uriel for liking "fallen humans"[2] and his willingness to order Kim Dokja around,[6] it seems instead to stem from a superiority complex regarding humans, or to some extent others in general, which causes him to act dismissively towards them. This is further supported by descriptions of him as looking down at others from his cloud[2] and as an angel who always looks at the world with sleepy eyes.[7]

Raphael's lethargic manner may be connected to a lack of sleep; his eyes have been described as sleepy multiple times,[2][3] and he is shown nodding off an hour into supervising the training of other angels.[1] His lie about Eden's sheep being the ones that appear when you close your eyes and think of sleep likely indicates a familiarity with sleeplessness, especially since he says they are good when you can't sleep.[2]

History[]

At some point, Raphael defeated the Demon King Asmodeus[6][2] and caused Asmodeus to owe a debt to him.[5]

Synopsis[]

When Kim Dokja meets Reinheit von Djerba in Paradise, Raphael expresses his dislike for the demon in an indirect message.

During Main Scenario 25, Raphael sends an indirect message frowning at the familiar stage of the Armageddon battlefield.[8]

Raphael is one of the major constellations of the <Eden> nebula who appear in the 73rd Demon Realm for an emergency meeting after their fellow archangel Uriel descends into her incarnation's body to defend Kim Dokja.[9]

He is present along with the other archangels to act as teaching assistants in Eden's training ground while Jophiel trains the low-ranking angels. An hour into the training, Gabriel asks him where Uriel is, and Raphael, who is nodding off on a cloud, fixes his hair and tells her that Uriel is being detained by Metatron. As he tells her what Uriel did, he borrows the power of the wind to speak like it's annoying. Thirty minutes later, during the meeting Metatron calls with the archangels, he is possibly among the other archangels giggling at Gabriel's response to Metatron asking where Uriel is and exchanging looks with each other. At the end of the meeting, Metatron, explaining why the other archangels can't take on Uriel's mission of monitoring Kim Dokja, says that Raphael has a doctrines tour the next week.[1]

After Kim Dokja returns from the 1863rd round, with Jophiel having stayed behind, and succeeds in clearing Main Scenario 45, Raphael appears in front of him and says that Gabriel has already been recovered. He expresses curiosity about Kim Dokja, before saying that Jophiel hasn't yet returned. When Kim Dokja says Jophiel willingly chose to stay in the other world line, Raphael is furious and distrusting of his words, creating a wild gust of wind, which slowly dies down as he recognizes that Kim Dokja is telling the truth. He asks for clarification, and Kim Dokja says he'll go to Eden to talk after Main Scenario 46; after saying this, Kim Dokja feels a strange change in Raphael's gaze, as Raphael knows the contents of the scenario. Raphael says he'll wait for Kim Dokja's answer and then leaves, with his status, which had been flooding the room, disappearing.[6]

Later, following Kim Dokja and Jung Heewon's entry into Eden, Raphael guides him through Eden's palace to meet Metatron. He makes small talk with Kim Dokja, asking him how he found out about the portal to enter Eden and how he feels about being in Eden, and poking fun at him for looking sleepy, then brings him through a corridor from the parlor, where Kim Dokja is surprised to see lambs grazing in a garden through a window. Raphael lies and tells him that those are the lambs people count in their heads to fall sleep, before laughing and telling the real story of how Uriel brought the sheep to Eden. As they watch the angels tend to the sheep, they see Uriel and Jung Heewon in the distance, and Raphael clicks his tongue, expressing disapproval of Uriel's attachment to humans.[2]

Raphael stares at Kim Dokja in shock at the Duet Between Good and Evil when Uriel leads Kim Dokja to sit behind Raphael, confused that a demon king would be sitting among the archangels.[10]After the Giant Story belonging to <Kim Dokja's Company> is announced as the season's 'Grand Prize', Raphael participates in the constellations' debate between whether the story should be considered good or evil. He argues that Kim Dokja's actions should not be considered evil simply because he is a demon king, and that whether an action is evil or not is dependent on its context. Asmodeus, presumably sarcastically, asks whether Raphael wants to discuss the paradox of good and evil, and in response, Raphael begins to do so sincerely: lying back on a bed of clouds, he flicks his fingers toward the air, causing scenes of Kim Dokja's Company performing in Gigantomachia to appear on the stage's screen, and then describes how the positive impact of their actions makes it difficult to find any evil in them.[5]

Relationships[]

Asmodeus[]

Asmodeus and Raphael are enemies with a shared history.[11]

In the 73rd Demon Realm, Asmodeus asks Uriel if Raphael is well and says that he hasn't forgotten his debt.[12] Later, during the Demon King Selection, when Raphael frowns at the simulated Armageddon battlefield, Asmodeus responds with an indirect message showing hostility towards him.[8]

Uriel[]

Asmodeus refers to Raphael as Uriel's brother and successfully taunts her by asking after him.[12]

Quotes[]

  • "In the end, all existences are made of stories and stories are made up of the sum of the events. However, it is hard to find evil in the events accumulated in this story."[5]
