Chapter 144
Namgung Minyoung, also known as the Breaking the Sky Sword Saint, is one of the most powerful transcendents in Ways of Survival, Yoo Joonghyuk's teacher and the creator of Breaking the Sky Swordmanship. She runs the Breaking the Sky Sword School in the First Murim.
Appearance[]
Namgung Minyoung's half-giant heritage leads to her incredible height, towering over most incarnations at around three metres tall. She has an immense presence.[3] When speaking loudly, her voice is likened to the True Voice of a constellation.[4] Furthermore, she is described to have clear, piercing eyes[5][6] and thick eyebrows that appear to wriggle or curve when she experiences strong emotions.[7][5] She is often accompanied by her dog and disciple, Breaking the Sky Sword Master. Namgung Minyoung smokes a tobacco pipe.[5]
Personality[]
Initially, Namgung Minyoung comes across as arrogant and dismissive, playfully condescending to Kim Dokja and his companions. However, in reality, she is a prudent person who displays a healthy amount of caution and can usually be reasoned with, even when seriously angered.[7] [8] Like most transcendents she is incredibly stubborn and patient, having remained in Murim long after the last real martial artists "sold out" and left.[5] She is well aware of her strength and not easily pushed around, not even by other transcendents like Kyrgios Rodgraim or Cheok Jungyeong.[9] Ways of Survival compares her to a god, in terms of power.[10]
Namgung Minyoung is extremely blunt and appears to enjoy flustering people with bold and shameless remarks.[3] For instance, she is open about her love for handsome men and insists on being addressed with honorifics, lest she'll spank the offender's butt with her tobacco pipe.[11] While often vaguely bored or amused by other people's behavior,[3] she is not beyond genuine emotional reactions.[5] Namgung Minyoung is a fairly inquisitive person once something piques her interest, and will doggedly pursue a target to find answers to her questions.
Despite claiming to accept new disciples at all times,[12] she is reluctant to do so, as most students in Murim are not up to her high standards.[5] She won't accept just anyone: prospective disciples are expected to best her dog in combat first.[12] Namgung Minyoung takes great pride in the Breaking the Sky Swordmanship, refusing to sell it to the Dokkaebi as a skill and having outsiders learn it.[5]
Her training regimen is harsh, disobedience is punished severely. She values old-fashioned hard work and tenacity, does not respect shortcuts, and places a lot of emphasis on fundamental techniques. Her praise has to be earned and she is shown to be critical of even amazing feats. Nonetheless, she seems to appreciate people who will push back against her orders and have a mind of their own, seeing as she took a liking to both Kyrgios Rodgraim and Yoo Joonghyuk.
Namgung Minyoung isn't always honest or upfront about her true motivations and plans.[7] She may appear to toy around with her disciples, or seemingly refuses to teach them. But in reality, she cares deeply about her students. On multiple occasions she will dissuade them from learning her technique or send them away, precisely because she does not want them to get hurt.[7]
Evidently, Namgung Minyoung is compassionate underneath her gruff exterior. Her sharp wit and sexual innuendos[5] frequently make way for a more serious, gentle side and she can be warm-hearted and affectionate.[4][13] There are multiple situations in which she speaks sincerely to comfort Yoo Joonghyuk, though he notes that it doesn't suit her.[5] Namgung Minyoung is a good, non-judgmental listener, no matter how rude she usually is. Whether due to her Mirror Eyes or not, she appears to be an excellent judge of character as well.[5]
She also cares greatly about her roots, as evidenced by her interest in other giants[7] and her connection to the First Murim. She is sometimes described as a large or lonely tree, indicating her strength and steadfastness in the face of danger, as well as her desire to protect her "forest".[4] She is loyal to her home and people, even when she has mixed feelings about them. Namgung Minyoung holds grudges. Still, she remains a just person who "doesn't pursue honor or vain lust".[14]
Despite being called an "unconventional existence that isn't tied to righteousness or unrighteousness" by Kim Dokja,[15] Ways of Survival describes her as follows: "Her heroic spirit is so high that she sometimes makes other people's definitions of justice look shabby."[4]
History[]
Namgung Minyoung faced a lot of trials in her youth for her mixed heritage. It is implied that she was raised among humans and discriminated, perhaps even hunted, by them for her "cursed giant blood".[14][16] The grand master of the Namgung family, one of the 10 Grand Masters of Murim, was her distant relative.[8] However, the clan did not contact her for generations until they required her help to prevent the destruction of Murim.[14]
Namgung Minyoung wasn't originally born in the Murim scenario.[4] Its people exploited her heroic nature and then abandoned her for wealth and fame by commercializing their martial art techniques. She started living in relative isolation, in a small and shabby hut,[12] as a symbol of the "fallen" Murim that valued the old training methods. Nonetheless, she was still feared and shunned for her power. The people viewed her as a type of disaster, rather than one of the 10 Grand Masters.[1] Though Namgung Minyoung believed Murim to be the "breeding ground of a corrupt world" and a place that "lost recognition and compassion", she still considered it her home.[14]
It is implied that she never encountered another giant until Kim Dokja's interference. Namgung Minyoung believed her giant clan to have been wiped out but expressed great interest in meeting her kin.[7] It was later revealed that they were imprisoned in the Underworld, specifically Tartarus. Namgung Minyoung seemed to be related to the giant Briareus.[6]
At some point in her past, she and Kyrgios Rodgraim were training for a long time as disciples under Yoo Hoseoung, the One Invincible Fist.[17][18]
Synopsis[]
In the latter half of Yoo Joonghyuk's second regression, Namgung Minyoung fought on her own against the alliance of returnees and died together with Breaking the Sky Sword Master.[19][3] She was murdered by the Heavenly Demon and the Blood Demon.[20]

Items[]
- Tobacco Pipe/Smoke: Used to spank misbehaving people (Yoo Joonghyuk[3]
. Smoke is potentially involved in a disappearing spell.
- The Empty and Clear Stone Milk: One of the greatest elixirs from the lost Zero Murim. Very rare and comparable to Star Fluid. Namgung Minyoung presumably got it from Reincarnation Island and passed it onto Yoo Joonghyuk, who fed it to the dying Yoo Sangah with Lee Seolhwa's help.[23]
- The Breaking the Sky Sword: A powerful sword that caused the people of Murim to fear her as a disaster. Namgung Minyoung used it less than ten times after gaining her title. She employs it in combat against the Nameless Mist, in the aftermath of the Demon King Selection.[24]
- Murim Dumplings: Tasty dumplings, exclusively found in Murim. Bought in paper bags. Namgung Minyoung feeds them to the Breaking the Sky Sword Master as well.[9]
Relationships[]
Breaking the Sky Sword Master[]

Yoo Joonghyuk[]
Yoo Joonghyuk sought out Namgung Minyoung in his second round to learn martial arts from her.[3] He lived several years together with them in the First Murim. She appeared to be the closest thing to a maternal figure (or a female rolemodel) Yoo Joonghyuk ever had. During his training, Namgung Minyoung would punish him for disobedience by spanking him with her tobacco pipe.[5] Yoo Joonghyuk still refused to address her with honorifics. Nonetheless, Namgung Minyoung told him to become her disciple again in his next regression.[5]
According to the Heavenly Demon, one of Murim's 10 Grand Masters, Yoo Joonghyuk and Namgung Minyoung were very similar.[5] This is confirmed by Kim Dokja who called them both dishonest (i.e. being outwardly blunt while hiding a soft and caring side).[7] Furthermore, he speculated that Yoo Joonghyuk's remaining humanity in the third round was the consequence of his time in Murim and likewise the reason for his cold attitude.[3]
Namgung Minyoung's tragic death in the second round severely traumatized Yoo Joonghyuk and opened his first stage of transcendence. He avenged her by murdering the Heavenly Demon and the Blood Demon in the 35th scenario.[5] Yoo Joonghyuk vowed to never return to Murim and become Namgung Minyoung's disciple ever again to protect her. He was murdered by her in his 18th regression. It is implied that he let his guard down because he believed to have already surpassed his teacher.[3]
In the third round, Namgung Minyoung takes an interest in Yoo Joonghyuk after witnessing him use the Breaking the Sky Swordmanship without ever having met him before. While trying to make him her disciple, she correctly assesses him as "lonely, arrogant and deeply wounded". Yoo Joonghyuk is now uses honorifics when speaking to Namgung Minyoung as he promised her in the second regression. After he shares his memories with her, their relationship is immediately close and familiar, similar to how it was in the second regression.[5] They are shown to understand each other intuitively without requiring many words.[8] Yoo Joonghyuk greatly respects Namgung Minyoung's strength. He also trusts her immensely, to the point of wanting to clear the 46th scenario with her help and openly stating that he needs her.[4] She is one of the few characters he confides in and whom he is openly vulnerable around.[13]
Kim Dokja[]
While initially annoyed by him due to his meddlesome indirect messages, she grows interested after recognizing him as her disciple's "first friend".[5] She takes note of his blurry face[3] and is somewhat impressed by his bravery. She is angered when he offers to sell her techniques to the dokkaebi but comes to see him as an important ally. She also holds a fondness for him as a disciple of Kyrgios and as Yoo Joonghyuk's companion.
Jang Hayoung[]
Namgung Minyoung accepted Jang Hayoung as her disciple, believing her to be highly talented and capable of achieving a new type of transcendence. Furthermore, she appreciates her beauty, as they rival her ex's good looks.[11] During the three year gap, Jang Hayoung ends up traveling together with Namgung Minyoung, Breaking the Sky Sword Master and Kyrgios Rodgraim to other scenario areas that were apparently designed for transcendents.[25]
Kyrgios Rodgraim[]
Kyrgios Rodgraim is implied to be Namgung Minyoung's ex-lover. Though the precise nature and circumstances of their relationship are unclear, she remarks that his poor personality is likely due to him being insecure about his size. Their romantic involvement was not described in Ways of Survival.[11] They have a shared past as fellow disciples of the same master.[17] Upon meeting again in a more casual setting, they fiercely debate whose student (Kim Dokja or Yoo Joonghyuk) is the stronger one.[26] Throughout the story they seem to grow closer again, traveling together and fighting side by side in various battles.
