We decide who will be judged from now on.

Chapter 397

Jung Heewon is a member of Kim Dokja's party. She was part of the marginalized group from Geumho station. She becomes one of the most vital party members, sometimes referred to as the "sword" of the group.

Appearance[]

Jung Heewon is described as beautiful, with full cheeks and gentle features.[4]She has large eyes with monolids, which are described as piercing (they turn red when using Demon Slaying, and after evolving into the Judge of Destruction, a Ring of Chaos appears in her irises when using Hour of Judgement). Her hair is long and black with free-flowing bangs; she puts it up into a bun during fights. It temporarily turns white when first evolving into the Judge of Destruction. She also has infinity symbols on the backs of her hands, from her status as Judge of Destruction.[5]Jung Heewon is tall and long-limbed, with a body similar to a model's. She has a long neck.

In her first appearance, she wears a jacket, slightly-torn skirt, and facemask.[6] For a short while, she wears the Bald General of Justice's straw mat, though she soon gives it away. After the Demon King Selection, Kim Dokja gives her a blue-black suit and a large cloak made by Mass Production Maker.[7] Immediately after the 3-year timeskip, she wears an old uniform. This is replaced by an SSS-grade formal suit prior to the <Eden> visit.[8]

As Erich Striker, she has red eyes and wears a full set of armor, complete with helmet.

Personality[]

Jung Heewon is initially introduced as a feisty woman who lacked the direction and confidence to realize her untapped potential. Fundamentally, she is a good person who will always go out of her way to protect the weak no matter who they are, simply because it is the right thing to do. Her strong sense of justice is intrinsic to her personality and she often acts on this instinct without second thought. She gets morally outraged upon witnessing indifference to or even endorsement of cruelty which ends up being a source of conflict with Han Sooyoung. She is fiercely affectionate towards and protective of those she loves.[9]

Despite being generally steadfast and dependable, Jung Heewon can be fairly volatile. Her initial despair at the world coupled with her black and white morality and general impulsiveness could have easily turned her into an indiscriminate killer if Kim Dokja hadn't intervened. Due to the trauma she experienced in the early scenarios, Jung Heewon is particularly vulnerable to mental attacks. Her incredible propensity to violence is amplified by the hurt she experienced, which is directly expressed by skills such as Demon Slaying and Judgement Time, both of which are centered around feelings of righteousness and blind rage with the purpose of vanquishing evil. In spite of being (or perhaps precisely because she is) highly compassionate and sensitive to perceived injustice, she has a quick temper and is prone to holding grudges.

When it comes to social interactions, Jung Heewon is generally blunt and humorous, often teasing Kim Dokja and the others. She also tends to be overly dramatic or sarcastic in several situations, but usually remains very considerate.[9] She enjoys gossiping about her companions' love lives but is somewhat awkward in romantic contexts herself. Unafraid of conflict, she won't hesitate to criticize someone's opinions or worldviews when they are at odds with her own.

Jung Heewon is not particularly booksmart and did poorly in school. Sometimes she appears self-conscious about it. However, she is quick-witted and has a remarkable intuition that allows her to make correct judgements in difficult situations. She has little patience for complicated strategies and prefers to deal with problems head-on. As an honest and direct person, she dislikes trickery and deceit. She is the first character Kim Dokja confided in, when he realized that he wouldn't earn her trust if he decided to lie. The fact that he kept secrets regardless and refused to open up, repeatedly violated her faith in him, is one of the main reasons for her later contempt.

Though she dislikes recklessness and self-sacrifice, she often pushes herself beyond her limits. During the scenarios she proved to be a hard worker who was eager to make a name for herself and earn her place. More than that, she finally felt empowered enough to fight against injustice for presumably the first time in her life.

Jung Heewon is willing to turn herself into a tool for other people's plans as long as her ideals align with theirs, for instance becoming the "sword" of <Kim Dokja's Company> and doing the "dirty work" for Kim Dokja so he could remain the King of No Killing. Despite her seemingly unwavering loyalty, she does not act blindly and will refuse to cooperate under certain circumstances. Unlike Lee Hyunsung, Jung Heewon is not entirely dependent on external orders as she mostly relies on a rigid set of internal rules. However, she easily becomes aimless when not provided with direction and isn't the best at assessing the big picture. She falls into despair when she feels useless. This is why she is often attracted to leaders who guarantee protection if she lends them her strength (e.g. Kim Dokja, Reinheit von Djerba).

Jung Heewon is highly susceptible to the idea of salvation in general, be it a peaceful world after the scenarios, or a place like Paradise that can be defended from external evil. Throughout ORV, Jung Heewon repeatedly learns that salvation comes at a terrible price. Generally speaking, she is distrustful of other people, particularly of men, and often requires some time to make up her mind on them. But no matter how often she overlooks her suspicions and trusts those who promise salvation, she finds herself confronted with a more complex reality that is irreconcilable with her own ideals. For the same reason, she eventually abandoned <Eden>'s concept of good to deliver justice by her own decree.

History[]

Her father was a soldier, and her family moved a lot because of that.[10] In the Korean army, Heewon's father was ranked Wonsa, otherwise known as Sergeant major.[11] He is a man whose age is somewhere in the 50s. Jung Heewon did not like her father, and he was one of the reasons why she ran away from home.[12] As a child, she learned kendo, although she wasn't very good at it. Prior to the scenarios, she used to be a bartender working at a cheap bar.[13] Jung Heewon mentions having an "annoying" kid brother in sixth grade, whom she took care of.[14] She had a strained relationship with her family. Despite neither of them liking their father, Jung Heewon's brother (possibly because of his younger age), was still attached to their father.[15] Jung Heewon's family lived in an apartment building, where other soldiers lived (at least one Sangsa, Master sergeant, and Jungsa, Sergeant first class).[11]

Jung Heewon was a character in the novel Ways of Survival, but she originally died offscreen early on in the scenarios and was thus never named or featured in the main storyline. Similar to Kim Dokja, she believed herself stuck in a dead end, with no real perspectives for the future. Despite all the hardships, she ended up benefiting greatly from the scenarios.

At the start of the scenarios, Jung Heewon manages to survive Main Scenario 1 and finds safety in the nearby Geumho Station. During these early days, the Cheoldoo Group takes control of the station and she gets set as a part of the marginalized group. During this time, she witnesses the depressing, hopeless life of the apocalypse inside the station. She eventually goes out to the surface to scavenge for food, but is betrayed by the mainstream group and some attempt to rape her. Although she manages to survive, she is abandoned by the group and she grows weaker due to the poisonous air; eventually unable to stand.

Synopsis[]

Left alone lying on the floor in a convivence store, she hears Kim Dokja rummaging around and makes a last meek cry for help. Dokja picks her up and takes her with him.

Personal Attributes[]

  • Crouching Figure (General): A low-rated "super-evolutionary" attribute that has the potential to evolve into a rare- or legendary-rated attribute.
    • Judge of Evil (Hero): The evolved form of the Crouching Figure attribute and the best of the three "Judge" attributes. This attribute strengthens the user when facing "evil". It also grants the skill Hour of Judgement.
    • Judge of Destruction (Legendary): The evolved form of the Judge of Evil attribute, it presumably strengthens the user against anyone they deem an enemy, allowing them to exact "justice" as they personally see fit.
  • Loyal Servant (rating unknown): An attribute possessed by Erich Striker.
  • Swordsmaster (rating unknown): An attribute possessed by Erich Striker.

Personal Skills[]

  • Demon Slaying: Presumably boosts the user's strength when facing demons.
    • God Slaying: The evolved form of the Demon Slaying skill. Presumably boosts the user's strength when facing a being significantly stronger than oneself, such as a high-ranking Demon King.
  • Hour of Judgement: Also translated as Judgement Time. It was originally used by the Valkyries. Granted by the Judge attribute series, it requires the consent of the associated individuals (the Absolute Good Constellations for the Judge of Evil, and <Kim Dokja's Company> for the Judge of Destruction) in order to be activated. It makes the user invincible against any enemies deemed "evil".[17]
  • Kingdom's Royal Swordsmanship: A skill possessed by Erich Striker. Presumably a reference to Erich's knowledge of the style of swordsmanship particular to the Kaizenix Archipelago.
  • Kendo: a sword based martial arts

Sponsor: Demon-like Judge of Fire[]

  • Hell Flames Ignition (Stigma): A pure white fire which burns away at any evil found in its target, and which cannot be put out. Kim Dokja describes it as one of the greatest stigmas in the world of Ways of Survival, boasting destructive power equivalent to the Prisoner of the Golden Headband's stigma.[17]
  • Advent of Half-God: Though it is unclear if it is truly the Advent, Uriel has descended into Jung Heewon's form a handful of times, piloting her body side-by-side and allowing Jung Heewon access to many of Uriel's powers. In this state, she gains white wings and can wield Uriel's sword, Flames of Retribution.

    • These stats belong to Erich Striker's body, so they may not align with Jung Heewon's own.

  • Exclusion of Future Evil (rating unknown): Linked to Kim Dokja's 'One Who Showed Contempt for a Streamer'. Presumably linked to fighting the Disaster of Floods, an "evil" from the future.[21]
