Jang Hayoung is a returnee who formerly resided in the 73rd Demon Realm. She is the second main character of Ways of Survival, introduced over 1000 chapters in.

Though Kim Dokja initially perceives her to be male due to the body she transmigrated into, she repeatedly counters any comments that presume she is male,[2] and describes herself as female in scenes from her own point of view.[3][4] Her gender is written as ambiguous in Part 2, however, in Chapter 363 the Korean switches to using explicitly female pronouns for her.[5]

Appearance[]

In Aslan Makerfield's body, Jang Hayoung has wavy blond hair. She has large, clear, and deep double-lidded eyes, with soft eyebrows. She has a sharp nose and a small mouth, with a dimple that appears when she smiles or laughs. Her skin is pale and smooth, and her face is androgynous. She is twice as beautiful as Yoo Joonghyuk. In official art she is usually seen wearing medieval European style clothing.

Jang Hayoung's original appearance prior to her transmigration is unknown.

In the Journey to the West scenario she wears a fake beard.

When acting as the Prisoner of the Golden Headband's incarnation body, her hair grows much longer and a slender golden circlet appears around her head. Her body is covered by a golden-furred coat, and her eyes also turn gold. An immense Status radiates from her entire figure.[6]

Personality[]

Though Jang Hayoung suffers from episodes of depression and laziness she is overall a very passionate person. When suggesting her character to tls123 Kim Dokja described her as having the opposite personality traits of Yoo Joonghyuk.[7] She is prone to thinking badly of herself and feels somewhat jaded towards the world due to her life prior to transmigration, but when she believes that she can make a difference in something she will give it her all.

Jang Hayoung holds an optimistic view of the world that ends up influencing Kim Dokja's own worldview. She believes that communication is never truly impossible no matter how thick the wall between people is, you can still write something on it and change things and reaching out to other people is never a wasted effort.[7]

History[]

Jang Hayoung was previously an office worker who died from overworking herself. When she transmigrated into a new life she vowed to never work hard again. She was disappointed to find that transmigration granted her no special powers or role. Until Kim Dokja arrived in the demon realm she lived keeping her head down and helping out Aileen in her shop.

Dokja suggested the idea for Jang Hayoung's character to tls123 thinking she would make for a cool protagonist that would contrast Yoo Joonghyuk. As such Dokja believes he is responsible for her existence.[8]

Synopsis[]

Her first appearance is when Kim Dokja bumps into her in 73rd Demon Realm. She enters Aileen's Workshop and notices the 2 Demon Earls extorting Aileen for coins. She intervenes, but becomes a liability as they threaten to turn Hayoung into a slave/prostitute in the Industrial Complex. Hayoung acts calm and jokes about this, but Aileen knows she is panicking. Dokja soon enters the Workshop and commissions an item that is exact amount the Demon Earls asked from Aileen.

Kim Dokja knows that Jang Hayoung posses a wall like the fourth wall and asks her to use it to send out messages to constellations. She poses as a 15 year old school girl and ends up befriending Abyssal Black Flame Dragon. For helping Black Flame Dragon she gets the role of 'fighter' in the revolution scenario and kills several executioners. She helps Dokja complete the revolutionary scenario and free the Industrial complex.

Jang Hayoung is chosen by Dokja to come with him, Han Myungoh, Yoo Joonghyuk, and Biyoo to go to First Murim. In First Murim Jang Hayoung finds she has a talent for Breaking the Sky Swordsmanship.

Relationships[]

Kim Dokja[]

Jang Hayoung admired the Demon King of Salvation before she knew that it was Kim Dokja. Upon discovering it, she pretended that they were two different people, rarely acknowledging they are the same person. Still she cares a lot about Dokja and is upset that he frequently left her behind and excluded her from Kim Dokja's Company, not knowing about the guilt he felt for creating her.

Abyssal Black Flame Dragon[]

Using her wall, Hayoung sent Black Flame Dragon a message claiming she was a 15 year old girl. This resulted in them becoming friends as Black Flame Dragon was excited to talk to someone his own age. Even after learning she lied he still seems to see her as an ally.

Aileen Makerfield[]

Jang Hayoung is an employee of the Etika clock store. Aileen Makerfield has known her for so long that she is capable of knowing Jang Hayoung's true feelings, despite the latter's bravado. It appears that they are aware of each other's true identities and origins. Hayoung is shown to be rather protective of Aileen.

Namgung Minyoung[]

Namgung Minyoung accepted Jang Hayoung as her disciple, believing her to be highly talented and capable of achieving a new type of transcendence. Furthermore, she appreciates her beauty, as they rival her ex's good looks. During the three year gap, Jang Hayoung ends up traveling together with Namgung Minyoung, Breaking the Sky Sword Master and Kyrgios Rodgraim to other scenario areas that were apparently designed for transcendents.

Trivia[]

  • Taking the year that ORV started (2018) to be the same calendar year in-text at the start of the novel, and assuming that all ages are given according to the Korean system, Jang Hayoung was born in the year 1996.
    • This does not take into account her nature as a transcendent and returnee/transmigrator, which makes it likely that she spent time in places that dilated time. This calculated birthdate assumes her age is aligned with the passage of time on Earth since the beginning of the scenarios.
  • At karaoke she dances with Lee Jihye. She leaves midway to beg the owner for more time as a free service.[11]
  • If she was a high school student, the first thing she would do after arriving at school is look at the lunch menu. She would be very sensitive to rumors and know most of the things happening at school. She would also be a member of the broadcasting club.[11]
  • Hayoung is Shong's favorite character.
